THEIR parents used to read them stories in bed but, in a role reversal, pupils from 11 schools in Malacca, Negeri Sembilan and Johor are telling theirs digitally.
They were participants of a recent multimedia-based educational programme called Digital Story-Telling organised by Telekom Malaysia Bhd in collaboration with Multimedia Development Corporation.
The programme, which also included teachers, is aimed at promoting the use of Information Communications Technology (ICT) applications in learning and teaching activities.
Pupils were encouraged to use the ICT knowledge acquired to improve their academic performance. Teachers, in turn, can provide a more interactive and interesting learning environment in schools with enhanced ICT skills.
The programme encourages the creation of user-generated content which will boost the development of the local applications industry in line with the government's aspirations to develop a rich multimedia education sector.
Some 160 schoolchildren and their teachers were provided with training and classes on ICT peripherals, movie-making software such as PhotoScape, PhotoStory and Audacity, and multimedia applications.
The knowledge gained then came into play when participants used it to create a three- to five-minute movie on Malaysia's culture, heritage and environment.
To produce the film, participants were also taught to create a storyboard, procure necessary resources and materials, perform the shooting, record the voice-over and insert the effects and music.
At the end of the four-day course, the short movies were presented to a panel of judges, who selected a winner from each state.
Each participating school was divided into smaller groups consisting of four to five team members for the production of the short movie. Group One from SK Padang Sebang won the contest for Malacca while Group Three from SK Amar Penghulu and Group One from SK Seri Belahan were the winners for Negeri Sembilan and Johor respectively.
Each winning team member received a MP4 player and a plaque.

The schools which participated in this programme were among the 25 schools adopted by GITN Sdn Bhd (GSB), a subsidiary of TM, under the GSB TechnoGogy Learning in Schools programme.
